Last week I decided to go and see the new independent movie, Sunshine. It is directed by Danny Boyle the director of 28 Days Later and Trainspotting.

The basic story is pretty simple, it’s 50 years in our future and our Sun is dieing. The earth has become a frozen wasteland and eventually all of humanity will die out. So humanity launches a mission to re-ignite the sun using a huge atomic bomb. If this were the end of the story the movie would not be very original at all. But just like Danny Boyle’s other movies this movies story is driven mostly by the human characters and their interactions.

The characters are well written and well acted. The sci-fi story is more of a side story to provide a setting for the characters stories to play out. I can not get into the character stories too deeply because it will give away the most important parts of the movie, but it is safe to say that if you enjoyed 28 Days Later and Trainspotting you will like this movie too.

Overall this was a refreshing change from the standard summer blockbuster, and was well worth the ticket price.
