Re-Ripping Music

by Nick.

I just started re-ripping all my CD’s again, and this time I am trying to do it a little more smartly. This time I am ripping everything to lossless FLAC format. This was I will not have to rip my CD’s again. I will have a high quality archive of all my music, which I can just encode into any lossey format I want or need later.

I like iTunes and now I have a MacBook Pro I was even more complled to use it, but I really dislike how they refuse to support any other music formats. I started to encode in Apple Lossless but then thought better of it. Because it seems like you are at the mercy of Apple if you ever want to re-encode you music in a format other than AAC.

For the ripping I am using Exact Audio Copy to ripping with all error checking on. Then using the external FLAC encoder.

Ofcourse now I am sitting there looking at my high quality FLAC music and I do not want to re-encode it and make a lower quality AAC file for iTunes, and I do not want to make another huge Apple Lossless archive just for iTunes. So I started checking out other music players again.

After checking out a few I finally gave Songbird a try again, and boy has it improved quickly. The last time I tried it was just when it had come out of BETA of it’s 1.0 release. Songbird is now at 1.2 and it is much better. But that’s another post.

So now on my main computer I am playing FLAC files in Songbird, on my laptop I am going to be using AAC in iTunes and use that to sync my iPod. Seems to be my best shot at having the best of both worlds, portability and quality.

I have a few plans for updating my speakers and sound so I will post about that later.

Vitalic – OK Cowboy

Vitalic - Ok Cowboy Cover

Recently I have been moving away from electronic music, and have been listening to more rock based music. This is mostly due the lack of good original electronic music releases over the past few years.

However after hearing a Poney by Vitalic on a YouTube video I decided to pick up the whole album, and was glad that I did.

OK Cowboy by Vitalic contains some of the best electronic music I have heard in a long time, and I have listened to the whole album several times since buying it.

Poney (Part 1), Wooo, Trashion, and The Past are my favorite tracks. The others are still good, but these four tracks make the album a good buy. These days if I get three good tracks from an album I am pretty happy.

Vitalic manages to create a fresh sound, while at the same time keeping their roots in the old school electronic music I grew up listening too.

If you enjoy electronic music then I would suggest giving this one a try.

So Long iTunes

by Nick.

For a while now I have been using iTunes as my main music player and the iTunes music store as my exclusive online music store, however I have come to the end of the line. There has not been one single thing that has caused me to give up on iTunes and Apple, but a combination of lots of things that when put together make iTunes not such a hot product.

Phillips SHD9100 Wireless Headphones

by Nick.

Phillips Wireless Headphones Phillips just announced some new Wireless Headphones that are meant to provide nearly the same quality as their wired counterparts.

The SDH910 headphones have a lot of nice features that am I am excited about. Mainly the high quality audio via digital wireless, standard AAA rechargeable batteries, attractive recharging docking station and light weight.

If this product is priced reasonably (for me around $100-$125) then I think these could really take off. They would be perfect for watching TV, or on my computer. I will be keeping an eye out for these when they hit the market.

Entertainment Review

by Nick.

Not much has been happening around here for the past week or so, I have been spending most of my computer time trying to decide what components I want in my new system. So I thought I would share some of the movies I have seen, and music I am listening too.

Music: Ratatat Classics

I first found Ratatat when I was looking for music under the XL Music label. When I was younger living in England XL alway had the cool cutting edge groups and music. Most notable The Prodigy and the then new Rave and Jungle music.

Ratatat is not Rave or Jungle, but they are very good. Their sound is kind of a mix between alternative rock and electronic music. There are no vocals which make it perfect for listening to while working.

This is the first album I have bought in a long time that is original, and good. Just a good disc and I would recommend it to anyone. Because it is a mix between rock and electronic I think that the overall sound can appeal to a diverse audience.
