Vitalic – OK Cowboy

by Nick.

Vitalic - Ok Cowboy Cover

Recently I have been moving away from electronic music, and have been listening to more rock based music. This is mostly due the lack of good original electronic music releases over the past few years.

However after hearing a Poney by Vitalic on a YouTube video I decided to pick up the whole album, and was glad that I did.

OK Cowboy by Vitalic contains some of the best electronic music I have heard in a long time, and I have listened to the whole album several times since buying it.

Poney (Part 1), Wooo, Trashion, and The Past are my favorite tracks. The others are still good, but these four tracks make the album a good buy. These days if I get three good tracks from an album I am pretty happy.

Vitalic manages to create a fresh sound, while at the same time keeping their roots in the old school electronic music I grew up listening too.

If you enjoy electronic music then I would suggest giving this one a try.

Canon Prixma iP4500

by Nick.

A few weeks back I bought the Canon Prixma iP4500 and I am really liking it. Since receiving the printer I have been using it nearly everyday for several weeks and none of the ink tanks have had to be replaced. This was a pretty big deal for me.

In a printer I was looking for a cheap unit that would produce decent color prints, but would also print lots of black pages without needed new ink every week. So far this printer has been great.

Using regular 20lb paper the color output is not good, a lot of the prints get a little blurry as the paper soaks up the ink dots. However when using photo paper, or just higher quality smooth paper the image quality is excellent.

As I mentioned before the printer has been able to print many black and white sheets without needed a refill. This is mainly due to the fact that the printer has a separate pigment black ink reservoir that is much larger than the other tanks and just prints black.

The only down side to this printer is the lack of a CMYK driver. Seeing as the printer uses CMYK inks I was hoping that it would allow me to directly print in CMYK. However the driver is RGB only so it converts all prints to RGB then reproduces using the CMYK inks. This seems a little odd to me, but the prints produces are still good, just not as accurate as I would like with regard to CMYK documents.

Overall though for the price I would recommend the printer, due to it’s relatively low cost, good print quality, and good price per page.

Sunshine Movie Review

by Nick.

Last week I decided to go and see the new independent movie, Sunshine. It is directed by Danny Boyle the director of 28 Days Later and Trainspotting.

The basic story is pretty simple, it’s 50 years in our future and our Sun is dieing. The earth has become a frozen wasteland and eventually all of humanity will die out. So humanity launches a mission to re-ignite the sun using a huge atomic bomb. If this were the end of the story the movie would not be very original at all. But just like Danny Boyle’s other movies this movies story is driven mostly by the human characters and their interactions.

Google Reader Alpha – Review

by Nick.

Recently I have found that my list of regular websites that I like to visit everyday has been getting longer and longer. So I started looking into RSS Feed aggregators to automatically monitor my favorite websites for me, and make it much easier to view the results. Google reader has matured into an awesome application, which fits the bill very well.

This is a review of the Labs version of Google reader. Applications in Google Labs are not considered by Google to be ready for full release and use, so they are probably missing features, and functionality that will be added at the time of it’s full release. So this article is a just look at the early release.

Casino Royale

by Nick.

This afternoon I made a special trip after work to get the new James Bond film (and a toy bond car for free :P ). Bond films have been in a rut for quite awhile now, just feeding us the same formula that worked in the in the past, but got stale in recent years. Luckily it seems that Casino Royale is trying to break the mold a little.
